LGBTQ 101
with Leisan C. Smith, Director of Student and Community Engagement

Join us in a celebration of
Pride month by learning about the LGBTQ community and culture in an interactive
program led by Bexley City Schools' Director of Student and Community Engagement,
Leisan Smith. Smith will lead discussions about differences between sex, gender
identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation. She will challenge the
notion of a "gender binary" and discuss what it means and looks like to be an
ally. Learn about the importance of pronouns and the definitions for commonly
used words in the community like homophobia, cisgender, transgender, and more.
You will gain knowledge and also experience to move forward as an ally to the
LGBTQ community.

Leisan Smith joined Bexley City Schools in fall 2015 as the Director of Student and Community Engagement. Her goals focus on helping students overcome non-academic barriers to success as well as addressing diversity and inclusion topics.  With a Masters of Education and a B.A. in Communication from the University of Cincinnati, Ms. Smith has served in management positions in the Cincinnati area at a charter high school, a YWCA, a pre-college program and at the university level. Most recently she was the inaugural Director of the University of Cincinnati's LGBTQ Center. She served in this role for five years before moving back to Columbus.

She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Kaleidoscope Youth Center (KYC). KYC's mission is to create safe and empowering spaces for LGBTQ youth through advocacy, education, support, and community engagement. Leisan is dedicated to helping communities that are often marginalized find their voice and have a place at the table and she works to make sure that conversations about diversity and inclusion are intersectional.
