Demons, Great Whites and Aliens: Representing American Fear

How have U.S. writers and filmmakers represented fear, and why? Dr. Ivonne M. García, Associate Professor of English & Literature at Kenyon College, will discuss these questions to examine specifically "American" novels, short stories and films that seek to incite fear in one way or another.
What is the relationship of American horror to American history and to ongoing national issues, especially those involving race, class, sexuality and gender? She will uncover how these texts and films are cast as specifically "American" and why this is significant to our understanding of them and their historical contexts.
